FUNDING BODY: Horizon 2020 EU Research and Innovation Program under grant agreement 635316
CODE: 635316
MAIN RESEARCHER: José Luis Ayuso
DESCRIPTION: Ageing Trajectories of Health: Longitudinal Opportunities and Synergies (ATHLOS) is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program. The Consortium is coordinated by Dr. Josep Maria Haro; it started in the year 2015.
It is a five-year project and consists of 14 partners from 11 European countries. Experts from the areas of demography, sociology, clinical medicine, epidemiology and public health, health statistics, economics, data management, and policies participate. ATHLOS will merge large sets of longitudinal database variables derived from several European and international studies. The Consortium will create and analyze a set of harmonized data that includes the identified longitudinal studies, which comprise more than 341,000 subjects.
ATHLOS is a research and innovation action aimed at identifying the trajectories and determinants of healthy and active aging, from the first stages of development onwards. The risk and protection factors will be determined, their interactions, the stages of life in which they impact health the most, and how the modification of these factors -through the interventions of promotion, prevention and treatment- can change the individual and the health of the population. This deeper understanding of aging will also result in a more realistic definition of “old age” than the standard chronological approach.
