DESCRIPTION: The Training European Network project: Metabolic Dysfunctions associated with Pharmacological Treatment of Schizophrenia (TREATMENT) is a proposal of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training Network, coordinated by Doctors Ángela Valverde and María Monsalve, which started in 2017.

The goal of TREATMENT is high-level education in the characterization of the molecular signals that underlie the metabolic dysfunctions present in patients with severe mental disorders and those induced by drugs, particularly antipsychotic drugs. TREATMENT will provide knowledge, skills and multidisciplinary tools to implement this ambitious strategy by training young predoctoral scientists in a program that combines molecular biology, psychopharmacology, metabolism, and mental health research. As a consequence of the project, the aim is to design and validate products and tools that have a practical use in the assessment of patients’ metabolic risk. The ultimate goal of this training network is to enhance the intersectoral and transnational employability of young scientists in the academic, public and private sectors to encourage the development and implementation of personalized medicine tools that provide effective treatment options for chronic mental disorders and decrease the risk of developing metabolic disorders.

As part of the TREATMENT project, a clinical trial will be carried out in patients with First-Episode Psychosis (TREATMENT-patients) coordinated by Dr. Pilar López García. This subproject aims to study the metabolic profile of patients before and after receiving antipsychotic treatment, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying the metabolic profiles of patients. A longitudinal follow-up of the patients will be carried out to evaluate the molecular changes associated with the metabolic dysfunctions.
